Hundreds of Hawaiians and their supporters took part in the April 29 Waikīkī-to-Pali Lookout midnight march honoring the 200th anniversary of the conquest of O'ahu and the uniting of the islands by Kamehameha the Great. Ceremonies along the Pali Highway eommemorated the 1795 Battle of Nu'uanu. Said Mel Kalāhiki, one of the organizers, "Walking up that long hill, I think everyone was physically drained, but the spiritual high gave us a lift to the top."
