Healthy Communities --Waiʻanae

The Wai'anae coast of O'ahu is a | plaee where Hawaiian culture j leads the way and where eommu- j nity is strong. On the Wai'anae coast 9 there are lots of important efforts at ;j community development and lots of I projects whieh make a difference in the j daily lives of not only those who live on ■ the coast but all of us who are inspired j by their example. I

One of the places where we ean find j inspiration is the Wai'anae Coast j Comprehensive Health Center. One of \ I the projects that has made a difference is ■ the Breast Cancer Research Project I whieh has supj>orted kōkua groups I along the Wai anae Coast. In these .■ groups women eome together and get fl important information about breast I cancer and about navigating the health I s ystem. They share stories and leam fl from eaeh other and supvort eaeh other. fl They learn how to do their own breast H exams and get free mammograms and H cervical examinations. Over 500 women fl and their families in Wai'anae have fl been enriched by this project. fl Another important project whieh H leads to healthy living is Gigi Cocquio H and Makaha Elementary School's agri- fl culture and acquaculture program. Kids from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade grow H vegetables and raisefish. fl
