UH tuition waivers for Hawaiians to be reviewed

Should the Unīversity of Hawai'i eoniinue providing tuition waivers for students of Hawaiīan ancestry? Watch future issues of Ka Wai Ola O OHA for notices of public hearings on this matter. UH Communicalīons Dīrector Cheryl Ernst said the hearings will likely be held before the end of the year. The state anorney general has required the school to hold public hearings on extending for one-year tuition waivers to students who are either Hawaiian, hlind, a member or dependent of a member of the Nanonal Guard. or enrolled in a teacher trainīng incentive program. Two-hundred Hawaiians enrolled in the UH system — whieh includes the community colleges - paid no tuition during the 1994-95 school year. Most of these students attended UH-Mānoa and UH-Hilo. State law authorizes up to 250 waivers; Emst expects that the full 250 waivers will be granted this year now that the program is more well known. If more than 250 Hawaiians apply, preference will be given to stndents studying Hawaiian language or education, involved in recroitment programs aimed at increasing unerrepresented groups, or meeting financial aid criteria. Applications and deadlines vary from campus to campus. according to OHA education specialist Ka'iulani Vincent. Anyone interested in tuitīon waivers should contact either their office of student services, financial aid office, minority student office, Hawaiian student programs or academīc eounselors on the campus of their ehoiee.
