Celebrating the Year of the Hawaiian Language

For 90 years, from 1896 to 1986, the Hawaiian language was banned from use in the public schools. To mark the centennial of its banning and its recent revival, Gov. Ben Cayetano has proc!aimed 1996 the Year of the Hawaiian Language. In honor of this year, Ka Wai Ola will feature stories, happenings and portraits of our language's survival through those 90 years, plus its ability to flourish

in these past 20 years of Hawaiian renaissance. If your business, organization or 'ohana is using the Hawaiian language on a regular basis, we'd like to hear your stories. This month's submission comes from 'Ahahui 'Olelo Hawai'i. It was established 19 years ago as an organization to support and perpetuate the language of these islands.
