There's a hopehil message and tools for healthy living with diabetes offered this month in statewide activities during National Diabetes Awareness Month, sponsored by the state Department of Health in cooperation with the Hawai'i Diabetes Awareness Coalition. Take this simple risk test: Does someone in your family have diabetes? Are you overweight? Did you get diabetes when you were pregnant? If you answered yes to any of these questions, and are 25 years or older, you may be eligible for a research study to help find out if diabetes ean be delayed or prevented through diet and exercise. The study is being carried out by the University of Hawai'i and the Queen's Medical Center Diabetes Prevention Program. The program is looking for 60 volunteers, especially Native Hawaiians. Volunteers should be willing to participate for three to six years. Volunteers will receive: free medical exams, a team of caring doctors and nurses for regular appointments, a ehanee to avoid getting diabetes and help your family in future by contributing to medical research.
