Board Business

At its meeting of July 30, the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs ratified the appointment of a negotiating team consisting of Chair DeSoto, Vice Chair Apoliona and Trustee Campos to enter into discussion with the state on possible settlement of the issues decided in OHA's favor by Judge Daniel Heely in OHA vs. State. The board also approved payment of fringe benefits for two Department of Land and Natural Resources burial programs positions OHA is funding for fiscal year '98. It approved amendments to the homestead loans program sponsored by OHA, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and First Hawaiian Bank, whieh would make the loan program more attractive to homesteaders. The board deferred the selection of a contractor to create and execute a seven-month educational campaign. It also deferred the hiring of alternate counsel for kuleana escheat litigation in cases where primary counsel Paul, Johnson, Park and Niles has a conflict of inter-

est, as well as the modification of the primary counsel's contract so that the alternate might be reimbursed and compensated. On Aug. 6, the board selected Starr, Seigle, McCombs, ine., dba ProComm, to create and execute a sevenmonth educational campaign for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. On Aug. 1 1 , attorney applicants representing five law firms were interviewed for the position of board attorney and the board approved the hire of Sherry Broder, Esq. At its Aug. 25 Maui meeting, the board deferred a motion to fund a Honda generator to back-up the respiratory support system for Alika Aina, an accident victim. Resolving into executive session, it approved settlement of Civil No. 2964103. Not meeting with board approval were a motion to approve the amendments to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs' lease of fifth and twelfth floors at the Pacific Park Plaza, and another motion to appoint an ad hoe Y2K computer eomplianee planning committee. ■
