Honored with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs' Ke Kukui Mālamaiama Award for excellence in Hawaiian education, at a dinner Dec. 9, were (left to right) Lui Keali'i Hokoana, project manager for Maui Community College I Native Hawaiian Vocational Education Program; KO Kahakalau, who created and coordinates the Kanu o ka 'Āina Hawaiian Academy, an interdisciplinary school within Honoka'a High School; Rita Gora, a kupuna with the Hawaiian studies program of Ma'ema'e Elementary School; and Liiikalā Kame'eleihiwa, director of Center for 1 Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. For their exceptional dedication to furthering the educa- 1 tion of Native Hawaiians, they received $1 ,000; an I engraved plaque; James Rumford's book, "When Silver I Needles Swam," as a memento of the occasion, various I gift certificates and a lei hulu (feather lei) with a kukui I nut symbolizing enlightenment. ■ §
