Cooking essentials

Our ancestors steamcooked most of their food in the imu or roasted it over an open fire. For your healthful cooking today, you will need a pot with a tight-fitting lid, sized to fit your family's needs, and a steamer basket, available for a few dollars at Long's. Wash all your vegecables well. Cut carrots, potatoes (peeling is optional), and eggplant into chunks. Cut away tough ends of broccoli stalks and discard them. Peel the remaining stalk and cut it up. Plaee denser veggies into the steamer basket in your pot and add two inches of water. Coverand steam five to eight minutes while you break the broccoli and cauliflower crowns into small florets. Add these to other veggies and steam another three minutes. Pau. This is so simple, easy and tasty and alot eheapee than buying fast food. ■
