Mahalo to all who have joined in helping to create a strategic plan for future Kamehameha Schools programs and services. \

j| Phase I of Kamehameha's strategic planning process, Kl whieh ran from November 3, 1999 to January 31, 2000, . T* was aimed specifically at collecting information and k materials covering a broad spectrum of educational topics. A comprehensive survey and assessment of academie journals, studies and other literature was initiated. An inventory of existing Kamehameha programs was made, as was a compilation of all legal and regulatory requirements - the mandates - Kamehameha Schools must adhere to in its day-to-day operations. Community input sought Most importantly, Phase I was a time to go out into the community to talk with people affected by Kamehameha Schools, to gain insight from them as to how Kamehameha might plan for its future. Community input was encouraged and gathered through a number of activities, including: • Holding 21 community meetings statewide - in Kaka'ako, Nānākuli, Hale'iwa, Kāne'ohe, Puhi, Hilo, Keauhou, Waimea, Lahaina, Pukalani, Hāna, Kalama'ula, Lāna'i City and Kapālama. More than 1,200 people attended; • Distributing more than 100,000 surveys through Ka Wai Ola O OHA, through Kamehameha's alumni newsletter, I mua, via direct mailings and at community meetings; • Inviting and collecting feedback and input through a KS Strategic Planning website, toll-free phone lines, e-mail, face-to-face interviews, small-group discussions and through various other means; • Producing and broadcasting, via statewide public access TV, a 60-minute presentation about KS strategic planning, including solicitation for feedback and input; • Retaining strategic planning consultant KPMG to help develop a comprehensive strategic plan for Kamehameha Schools; • Bringing state, national and international experts to Hawai'i to meet and share their ideas and new information with KS faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and others involved in the planning process.

Issues emerging The thrust of Phase I was to gather as mueh information as possible about where Kamehameha Schools is today, what educational needs exist for Kamehameha to address in the future, and how Kamehameha might best use its resources in the future to address those needs. Through information gathered in Phase I, a number of possible issue topics have emerged. They range from | the need for prenatal care education to education for families and adults, from providing alternative learning ; environments for students of diverse academic abilities to studying the organizational structure of Kamehameha Schools overall. Issues like these - and many others - will be examined more closely in the next planning phase, Phase II. Next steps Input received will now be organized and analyzed - processed - through working groups established specifically to examine and identify the issues that are of greatest importance to successfully achieving Kamehameha Schools' educational mission. Phase II began February 1 and is expected to extend at least through May 2000. Volunteers are needed to serve on these working groups. ; If you would like to be considered for one of these groups, please eall with your personal contact information and your area of expertise so you ean be notified of working group activities and schedules. For educationrelated issues, eall 842-8240. For endowment-related issues, eall 523-6368. The 'Olelo No'eau, or Hawaiian proverb, teachs us that no task is too big when done together by all, " 'A'ohe hana nui ke alu 'ia." Though there is mueh to be done, kōkua from everyone will help create a plan for Kamehameha Schools that truly honors the vision of our founder, Ke Ali'i Bernice Pauahi Bishop. To all who are already involved in the process, mahalo for your commitment. And to all who would like to participate, please join us. Your mana'o is needed.
