Tourism scholarships

The Hawai'i Hotel & Lodging Association is accepting applications through Aug. 15 for a set of new $1,000 annual scholarships for Native Hawaiian students majoring in the hospitality industry field. The scholarship program is inspired by the efforts of HHLA's late president, Clem Iudd Jr., a Native Hawaiian who exercised his influence in Hawai'i's visitor industry to promote programs that furthered the education of Hawai'i's youth. "The Hawaiian culture sets us apart from all other visitor destinations in the world, and it follows that we should encourage people of Native Hawaiian ancestry to participate in tourism's management," said HHLA President Murray Towill. The five Native Hawaiian scholarships are being offered by the Hawai'i Hotel Industry Foundation, a charitable arm of the HHLA. The foundation will provide $1,000 per student per year for up to four years. The scholarships are for graduating high school seniors of Native Hawaiian ancestry interested in hotel management and hospitality related fields who have been accepted to a two- or four-year program at an accredited college or university.
