Hawaiian studies fundraiser

Enjoy heavy pūpū and a Hawaiian nrusic janr — and support the good cause of the annual Ka Lei Pāpahi O Kākuhihewa scholarship and benefit fundraiser on Sat., Sept. 22 fronr 3 to 8 p.m. at Runrours Nightclub in the Ala Moana Hotel. Event organizers hope to raise nroney for college scholarships that will be awarded to students who attend Hawaiian studies progranrs in O'ahu public schools. Funds raised will also go to help with the training of kūpuna who teach Hawaiian studies classes for the Departnrent of Education. Ka Lei Pāpahi o Kākuhihewa is a Native Hawaiian educational organization consisting of current and former teachers in the Departnrent of Education's Hawaiian studies progranr. The group's nrission is to provide a resource to the DOE in the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture and heritage in Hawai'i's classroonrs. "We are especially glad that the DOE Hawaiian studies progranrs are being taught by sonre of our kūpuna, because they are able to share with our children years of experience in Hawaiian oral tradition and lifestyle," said organization president Keali'i'olu'olu Gora. At the upconring benefrt fundraiser, a kūpuna-teacher group will present an original progranr of nrusic and dance; featured entertainnrent also includes perfornrances by Mahea, the Nu'uanu Brothers and Ku'uipo Kumukahi.
