Johns to head Bishop Museum

Timothy E. Johns will take over the reins at Bishop Museum as the new director and chief executive officer on Oct. 1. Johns most recently served as chief operating officer for the Estate of Samuel Mills Damon, a position he has held since 2000. Prior to that, he was chair of the state Board of Land and Natural Resources. He has also served as vice-president and general counsel for AMFAC Property Development Corporation. Johns, who holds a law degree from the University of Southern California, is known for his activity in Hawai'i environmental issues. In taking over the post at Bishop Museum, he succeeds Miehael Chinaka who has been serving as interim president since January, when the museum's former director, William Brown, resigned. Museum board members are hailing Johns for his experienee in working with conservation issues, whieh are integral to research conducted by the Bishop Museum, designated as Hawai'i's State Museum of Natural and Cultural History.
