OHA visits Lānaʻi for community meeting

By Francine Murray KaWai Ola Attended by nearly 100 people, a Sept. 15 eommunity meeting on the Pineapple Island was the last in the series of statewide annual meetings held by the Offiee of Hawaiian Affairs.

A prayer and hula in memory of former OHA employee Pearl Ah Ho by members of her ehureh opened the meeting at Eāna'i High and Elementary Sehool. There was a presentation on behalf of the new Eāna'i Culture and Heritage Center, whieh opened in January, and students working in the restoration at Mauna Eei spoke of how mueh they 've learned. OHA Trustees visited both Mauna Eei and the Eāna'i Culture and Heritage Center earlier that day. Other groups attending the meeting ineluded Nā Pua No'eau

students, who thanked OHA for its eontinued support. Alu Eike Ine.'s island eoordinator updated OHA on its serviee to Native Hawaiians, representatives of Nā Pu'uwai Native Hawaiian Health System based on Eāna'i introdueed themselves, and Fanaians for Sensible Growth voieed eoneem over windmills

proposed on Eāna'i to generate alternative energy for off-island use. They sought OHA support for a cultural survey of the area where the windmills may be constructed. "Just prior to the convening of the community meeting, OHA Trustees and administration walked over to the lo'i kalo that students had planted on the grounds of the (Eāna'i High) school," said OHA Chairperson Haunani Apoliona. There they talked with the students about the project and its signifieanee to the school and as well as the community. ■
