Kaʻōnohi Awards set for Feb. 5

The 20 1 1 Alexander Friedenburg Ka'ohi'ai Ka'ōnohi Awards honoring those who have contributed significantly to Hawaiians' health and well-being will be presented Saturday, Feb. 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. on the Bishop Museum Great Lawn. The evening features music and pūpū, silent auction, dinner and an awards presentation. The awards have been presented by Papa Ola Lōkahi since 1994 in honor of the Dr. Alexander Ka'ōnohi, a naturopathic physi-

eian, pnarmacist and botanist descended from a long line of kāhuna lā'au lapa'au. K a ' ō n o h i embraced the integration of traditional and western healing practices in his treatment of Native Hawaiians.

Ka'ōnohi classified more than 240 herbs found in Hawai'i for use in naturopathic healing. At his Kapahulu elinie, he would accept fruit, sugar eane or rice as payment from patients. His benevolence also extended to sponsoring several students through medical and nursing school, according to Papa Ola
