A FURTHER LOOK AT NATIVE HAWAIIAN OBESITY

• 75.5% of Native Hawaiians are at riskfor being overweight or obese, compared to 57.2% inthe State (HBRFSS, 2010). o Healthy People 2010 objective was to lower Obesityprevalence to 15%. • 23.3% of Native Hawaiian mothers are categorized with Preconception 0besity compared to 15.8% inthe Stateof Hawai'i (PRAMS, 2010). • 1 9% of Native Hawaiian youth are 0bese, according to their BMI levels, compared to 14.5% inthe State of Hawai'i and 12.0% intheU.S.(BRFSS, 2009; CDC, 2008). • In 2006, 39.4% of Native Hawaiianswere 0bese, in 2007, 43.2%. This is a 10% increase in Native Hawaiian 0besity in 3 years (2009, 49.3%) (HBRFSS, 2006; HBRFSS, 2007). • Comparatively, 36.8% of Non-Hispanic Blacksand 30.7% of Hispanicswere nationallyclassified as 0bese in 2010 (BRFSS, 2010). o The two U.S. regions with the highest rates of Obesityprevalencewere theSouth (28.4%) and the Midwest (28.2%). TheState of Hawai'i has higher rates of 0besity (30.2%) than either of these two regions(BRFSS, 2010; MedNews, 2011).
