PRINCE KŪHIŌ HONORED

Earl Pamai Tenn tenderly places lei on the statue of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole on March 26, the state holiday honoring Hawai'i's former delegate to Congress and the father of Hawaiian civic dubs. After the early morning ceremony in Waikiki, a larger gathering of representatives from civic dubs and royal societies paid tribute to the prince at Mauna'ala, the royal mausoleum in Nu'uanu. Hawaiian civic dubs trace their origins back to Kūhiō, who founded the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu in 1 9 1 8. Today, with funding support from OHA, the civic dubs organize events throughout March all dedicated to honoring his memory and legacy, whieh indudes spearheading passage of the federal Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1 920 that established homesteads for native Hawaiians. - Couitesy: Phil Spalding/Association ofHawaiian Civic Clubs

OLOMANA RECOGNIZED AS 'SYMBOL OF INSPIRATION'

The state House of Representatives honored Olomana on March 21, presenting the group a framed resolution lauding it as a continuing "symbol of inspiration and positive direction for contemporary Hawaiian music and musicians today." A 2008 Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, Olomana has won numerous Nō Hōkū Hanohano Awards since its 1 9/3 founding by Jerry Santos and the late Robert Beaumont, including six for its 1981 album "Come to me Gently." Olomana has entertained audiences from Canada to Japan and performs live in Waikiki Friday and Saturday nights at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Bar. From left are: Reps.
