Stevenson's Mele Mural depicts hope

Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School's new mural ' 'Kalamakūokeau" features ali'i, the school's namesake and Hawai'i's warriors to spread a message of hope. Spanning two stories and more than 1,000 square feet, the mural was created in collaboration with loeal artist Estria Miyashiro and the Mele Murals puhlie art movement. It includes the work of all 665 Stevenson students, with guidance from lead artists Miyashiro, Wayne

Takazono and Eugene Kristofher, as well as Mele Murals Program Manager Mahea Akau. King David Kalākaua, Queen Lili'uokalani and Princess Kai'ulani are depicted on the mural with author Robert Louis Stevenson and Hawai'i warriors passing the torch to Hawai'i's youth. At a dedication ceremony, students presented the mural to the community with chanting, singing and performances by the school's hula hālau. ■
