"IN THEIR DISCRETION."

The Executive has so far changed, (we cannot say modified) its previously prevailing order as to persons having business at the Capitol being allowed to enter that sacred pile for such purpose, as to allow such persons to visit the building between 9 a.m., and 4 p.m., upon application to the Commander-In-Chief or the Officer of the Day. The officers named are permitted, "in their discretion," to allow such persons to go about their business. Really, Gentlemen of the P.G., isn't that a little too absurd? By what facts or conditions can you justify the presence of a line of five armed sentries between the front gate of the Capitol grounds, and the front door of the building, - 30 yards away? What danger demands the balance of an entire company in the building, and elsewhere in the grounds? For Heaven's sake, gentlemen, ring down the curtain upon that little farce. It already pulls upon the audience. You are men of courage, show your nerve in breaking down the cordon of bayonets by which you have surrounded yourselves, and trust for your protection to your own poweress, the placidity of the situation, and the good faith of the people.
